About us
The ZUKAMAS (“Future-oriented Climate Change Management for Urban Green Spaces”) research project explores how urban trees and green spaces along the Upper Rhine Graben can contribute to climate change adaptation. This interdisciplinary collaboration brings together six institutes of the University of Freiburg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), uniting expertise from diverse fields to build a sound scientific foundation for enhancing urban living environments.
Participating institutes include the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research – Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK-IFU) and the Joseph Gottlieb Kölreuter Institute for Plant Sciences (JKIP) at KIT, as well as the Institute of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK), the Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology and the Institute of Psychology at the University of Freiburg.
ZUKAMAS is one of three start-up projects within the “Innovation Campus Sustainability” (German: “InnovationsCampus Nachhaltigkeit - ICN”) and is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg (MWK). Under the motto “Transformations for Future Urban-Regional Spaces – Climate Protection, Resource Efficiency, and Well-Being”, the ICN aims to contribute to a sustainable society through social, technological, and economic innovations.
